As caregivers, we focus on the wellbeing of other people – our patients, family members and colleagues. During this challenging time, it’s important to have a plan to take care of yourself too. A few self-care techniques to remember:
Seek Out Support
Seek support from friends, family and other helpful resources. Let people who care about you know what is helpful and what is not.
Reflect
What has helped you cope with difficult situations in the past and determine if the same strategies can help you now.
Engage in Meaningful Activities
Replenish your emotional, physical, mental and spiritual energy.
Recognize
There may never be answers to some of the questions you and others may have about the situation. Get your information from trusted resources and limit your exposure to media that only focuses on what’s not working.
Control Your Self-talk
Instead of asking yourself “why” or “what if…” focus on “How can I respond? How can I prepare? What do I need to put in place to deal with what’s coming?”
