If you live, take classes, or work near a public space, it’s possible that you could get caught in a large crowd of people. If this occurs, it’s important to maintain awareness of your surroundings. Some tips for staying safe when surrounded by people include:
- Make certain your cell phone is fully charged. Keep your phone, keys, ID, and other important items physically on you, not in a purse or backpack.
- When possible, walk with someone else. This is especially important if you are entering a crowd that is agitated about an event or situation or that includes people who have been drinking.
- Maintain awareness of your physical location. Avoid getting pinned against buildings or barricades or trapped in a space that offers no options for escape.
- Be aware of the “crowd density level.” If you are having difficulty raising your hand to touch your nose or are being pressed against on all sides by others, the crowding has reached a critical level.
- If you are caught in a moving crowd, don’t try to go against the flow. Keep moving with the crowd and do your best to work toward its edges. Once you are on the crowd’s edge, it will be easier to break away from its momentum.
- Keep your feet underneath you. If you are having trouble staying upright, ask the person next to you for help.
- If you are in a group, do your best to keep everyone together. Designate a meet-up place if the group gets separated or stay in contact via text or phone.
- Avoid using alcohol or drugs before going into or while in a crowd. Drink plenty of fluids and bring along water so you can stay hydrated. If you are sick or don’t feel well, it may be better to avoid a crowd situation.
